This jogs my memory to relate somewhat stale SK news - he was the recipient of the Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the U.S. National Book Foundation last fall:

During the ceremony, attended by 900 guests, King spoke warmly of his wife Tabitha. “When I gave up on Carrie, it was Tabby who rescued the first few pages of single-spaced manuscript from the wastebasket,” he said.

King said he has no patience “for those who make a point of pride in saying they have never read anything by John Grisham, Tom Clancy, Mary Higgins Clark or any other popular writer.”

“What do you think?” King asked. "You get social academic brownie points for deliberately staying out of touch with your own culture?
